WASHINGTON STATE TO TAKE ON MIAMI IN THE 88TH ANNUAL TONY THE TIGER SUN BOWL ON DEC. 31, AT 10 A.M. (MT) IN EL PASO, TEXAS

EL PASO, Texas – The Sun Bowl Association, Kellogg’s and Tony the Tiger have announced that Washington State will face Miami in the 88th Annual Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, Friday, Dec. 31 at 10 a.m. (MT) in Sun Bowl Stadium with the game being televised on CBS.

The Washington State Cougars (7-5) will be making their third appearance in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl and will have a re-match of 2015 with Miami (7-5), who is out of the ACC. The Cougars beat the Hurricanes 20-14 in the 2015 matchup and knocked off Purdue in the 2001 Sun Bowl.

Miami’s appearance marks the ninth straight year and 45th time in school history the Hurricanes have competed in a bowl game. Miami owns a 20-24 overall record in previous bowl appearances.

“We are super happy about the match-up that we have, and it seems like both teams are very excited to come back to El Paso,” Executive Director Bernie Olivas said. “Our choices from the ACC were all plenty good but we have to wait for some other bowl to pick before us and we ended up with the best team possible that was left. I think these teams will give us a tremendous show.”

Under newly named first-year head coach Jake Dickert, the Cougars finished the regular season with a 7-5 overall record, 6-3 in Pac-12 play. It also marks the sixth bowl appearance in seven seasons by the Cougars, and sixth-straight when not including the COVID-shortened 2020 season.

The 2021 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl marks the 17th overall bowl game for the Cougar program.

In 2019, WSU fell short against Air Force at the Cheez-It Bowl in Phoenix, Ariz. In 2018, the Cougars came away with a 28-26 victory over No. 25 Iowa State in the Valero Alamo Bowl, en route to a program-record 11-win season and a No. 10 final ranking. Previously WSU has played in the Rose Bowl (1916, 1931, 1998, 2003), the Holiday Bowl (1981, 2003, 2016, 2017), the Aloha Bowl (1988), the Copper Bowl (1992), the Alamo Bowl (1994, 2018), the Sun Bowl (2001, 2015) and the 2013 New Mexico Bowl. The Cougars are 8-8 in bowl games all time.

Miami has previously played in the Sun Bowl. In 2010, the Canes lost to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 33-17, and in 2015, Miami lost to their opponent in the game this year, Washington State, by a score of 20-14 in a driving snowstorm.

Miami’s matchup with Washington State is only the second all-time meeting between the two schools, the first being in the 2015 Sun Bowl Football game.
