EL PASO, Texas – The Sun Bowl Association announced the inception of Sun Court Legacy on May 28, 2025, via social media. The entity will provide the Sun Court Legacy Award, a monetary prize to support each future Sun Court member in their professional and scholarly endeavors.
The Sun Court Legacy honors the past 90 years of the Sun Queen and her court. By bringing together former Sun Court members, the Sun Court Legacy is a space to celebrate their history and support the young women who follow in their footsteps. This network will provide mentorship and allow past Sun Court members to connect with the next generation. Sun Court Legacy will ensure that the spirit of the Sun Queen and her court lives on and grows stronger with every passing year.
“With its celebrated 90-year-old existence, the Sun Court is as big as the Sun Bowl football game,” said Executive Director Bernie Olivas. “Sun Court Legacy, founded by former Sun Queens, will ensure that the Sun Court lives on for years to come.”
The deadline to apply for the 2025-2026 Sun Court is June 20, 2025, at 3 p.m. (MT). Sun Court Legacy encourages any young woman in El Paso to register to be a part of such a rich institution in the borderland.
“For nine decades now, the Sun Queen tradition has represented decades of community, tradition, and pride,” said 2008 Sun Queen Celeste Nevarez. “This anniversary is a chance to honor the legacy of those who came before us and create space for the next generation. It is more than a title, it is about mentorship, connection, and how meaningful it is to be part of a tradition that leaves a mark long after the crown.”
