EL PASO, Texas – The Sun Bowl Association, Kellogg’s and Tony the Tiger have announced that Pittsburgh (ACC) is set to meet No. 18 UCLA (Pac-12) in the 89th Annual Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, Friday, Dec. 30 at 12 p.m. (MT) in Sun Bowl Stadium with the game being televised on CBS.
Pitt (8-4, 5-3 ACC) will make its fifth appearance in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl and will try to get over the .500-mark in Sun Bowl games. The Panthers fell to Stanford in their most recent Sun Bowl game, 14-13 in 2018.
The UCLA Bruins (9-3, 6-3 Pac-12) are in the top-20 and will also be making their fifth appearance in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl. The last time UCLA played in the second-oldest bowl game in college football, it defeated Virginia Tech 42-12.
“We cannot be more excited for our match-up between Pitt and No. 18 UCLA,” said Sun Bowl Association Executive Director Bernie Olivas. “It’s wonderful to bring back two teams who enjoy making the trip to El Paso and cannot wait to show them the Sun Bowl Hospitality everyone is familiar with.”
This is UCLA’s 38th overall bowl invitation after finishing the 2022 season with nine wins. The Bruins now have a chance to become the 10th Bruin team to record 10 wins for a season, the most in school history. UCLA finished the year as the nation’s No. 3-ranked offense and was fourth in the nation in rushing offense and rushed for at least 200 yards in nine games this season.
This will mark the 15th all-time meeting between Pitt and UCLA, but the first since 1972.
